Why Is It So Difficult to Find an Internship in India Even When You Are Willing to Work for Free?

AAsked by Anonymous19 October 2026

I'm a student trying to get my first internship, and honestly, the process is becoming frustrating. Most companies ask for prior experience, practical skills, or multiple projects, but how is a fresher supposed to gain experience without getting that first opportunity?

I've applied to several internships, but either I don't receive a response or the positions require skills I haven't had the chance to develop professionally. Is this what most students experience, or am I approaching my internship search the wrong way?

I'd genuinely like to know how students can find legitimate internships, avoid unpaid-work scams, and convince recruiters to give them a chance when they have no previous experience.

Facing the same thing? Let others know they are not alone.

I understand this frustration because many students are caught in the same cycle: companies want experience, but nobody wants to give them their first opportunity.

My advice is to stop waiting until your resume looks perfect. Start applying for internships where you meet the basic requirements, even if you don't match every skill mentioned.

If you're pursuing marketing, create a sample campaign. If you're interested in HR, practice screening resumes. If you're learning development, build a small project that solves a real problem.

These practical examples can help you demonstrate your abilities even without previous work experience.

Also, please don't assume that working for free is the only way to get an internship. Look for paid opportunities, check the company's credibility, and be cautious of anyone asking you to pay for a job.

When applying, personalize your resume for the role instead of sending the same version everywhere.

And don't get discouraged if you receive rejections. Your first internship may take time, but every project, application, and conversation can help you improve.

You don't need to know everything to deserve your first opportunity. You just need to show that you're willing to learn and ready to put in the work.
